Maarten Warmerdam made the light design for the production To Be Sung for the Brussels opera De Munt|la Monnaie. The opera is directed by Sjaron Minailo, with which he previously worked together on various projects. Starting point for this production was continuing changing light landscapes on projection screens at the back of stage. By adding gaze at the front of the stage through which the audience see’s the spectacle we added diffused plays of colour and shape inspired by the work of American artist Mark Rothko. At the center of the stage stood a monument designed by Belgium artist Renato Nicolodi which beautifully works with the monumental space of Flagey where the opera was set.
